About the sustainability awards
The sustainability awards at 50 Best recognise restaurants, bars and hotels that are taking practical steps to reduce their impact and build long‑term resilience, understanding that sustainability work should be actionable, measurable, and commercially realistic.
All entries are independently assessed by our team at The SRA using the Food Made Good Framework, which looks at three pillars:
- Sourcing (what you buy and where it comes from)
- Society (how you support your team and community)
- Environment (resource use, waste and impact)
This gives a clear, structured view of your current performance.
Every entrant receives a free, confidential sustainability report from The SRA. This report breaks down how your business performed under each pillar, highlights what you’re doing well, and provides clear, realistic recommendations for improvement. Whether you’ve entered before or not, this is a low‑risk way to get an independent benchmark of your operations, validate the good work you’re already doing and identify practical next steps.
Please note:
- Your report is confidential and shared only with you.
- Previous winners are not eligible to win again, but are encouraged to submit and receive their free report. Returning entrants receive a useful benchmark against peers in their region.
The SRA works harder than anyone else in the business to stay up to date with industry developments and their sustainability assessment is the gold standard for the F&B industry. We look forward to continuing our fruitful partnership with them!
About our partnership
In 2013, The World’s 50 Best introduced a new special award, the Sustainable Restaurant Award, to celebrate a restaurant on the 50 Best Restaurants list that was going above and beyond to reduce its impact and serve food fit for the future. In order to judge this award, 50 Best enlisted our help.
Because we have years of expertise in what a sustainable restaurant should look like, 50 Best asked our team at The SRA to come up with a judging process for the competition. Based on our Food Made Good Framework, we developed a globally applicable questionnaire for restaurants to complete, providing us with information across three pillars: Sourcing, Society and Environment. Over the years, we have updated and refined this questionnaire to ensure it captures the changing issues faced by restaurants who want to operate sustainably.
Not only is it important to celebrate the accomplishments of these restaurants, but the international nature of the awards and the high profiles of many of the chefs involved give us the opportunity to influence the global hospitality sector for the better. This helps us in working towards our own mission: accelerating change towards a sector that is environmentally restorative and socially progressive.
Since 2013, our work has expanded to cover every list produced by 50 Best, assessing restaurants and bars around the world. In 2023, this expanded to include hotels, too. Each year, we find that leading restaurants, hotels and bars across the globe are continuing to raise the bar — at a time when it’s never been more important.
