LAUNCHED BY BELU AND THE SUSTAINABLE RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION, A NEW DIGITAL GUIDE WILL SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE HOSPITALITY IN HONG KONG. 'SMALL CHANGES, BIG IMPACT: A GUIDE TO DRIVING SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH HOSPITALITY' IS A FREE RESOURCE TO HELP HONG KONG’S F&B SECTOR NAVIGATE THE PATH TO MORE SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS.
Belu and The Sustainable Restaurant Association are delighted to launch together a new digital guide to support sustainability in Hong Kong's hospitality industry.
The Guide was launched on Wednesday, 11th September, with a breakfast event supported by The Upper House and Fresh Accounting. The morning included a panel discussion entitled 'Small Changes, Big Impact: Driving Sustainability Through Hospitality', which was moderated by The SRA’s Managing Director, Juliane Caillouette Noble and joined by a panel of well-respected members from Hong Kong's hospitality community.
Speakers included Chef Agustin Ferrando Balbi of Andō restaurant, which just last month was awarded the top marks of three stars in the Food Made Good Standard, the flagship global sustainability accreditation from The Sustainable Restaurant Association. Also on the panel were Sheldon Fonseca, Culinary Director at The Mira Hotel (a three-star Food Made Good business); Carla Martinesi, Founder of CHOMP food waste app; and Gail Lanorias, Mixologist and Operations Manager at The Upper House (Belu Hong Kong’s first Founding Collective member).
A new sustainability guide for Hong Kong’s F&B industry
Belu has been working with The SRA for many years across a wide variety of projects. The most recent product of this ongoing relationship, 'Small Changes, Big Impact: A Guide to Driving Sustainability Through Hospitality' is a free digital resource to help Hong Kong’s hospitality sector navigate the path to more sustainable operations.
Grounded in The SRA’s comprehensive Food Made Good Framework, the Guide includes practical steps and resources to support hospitality businesses on their sustainability journey, whatever their starting point. By making this resource openly accessible and cost-free, Belu and The SRA hope to reduce the environmental impact of the hospitality sector.
From restaurants, cafés and bars to hotels and other F&B businesses, the guide covers everything from assessing a starting point and how to take action on sustainability, right through to communicating your hard work to staff and customers and building a collaborative network of like-minded businesses. Combining expert advice and insights with real-life examples, this has been designed as a practical companion for hospitality businesses.
Managing Director of The SRA, Juliane Caillouette Noble, said, “We’re delighted to continue our long-standing relationship with Belu in launching this new digital resource for Hong Kong’s hospitality sector. Now is an exciting time in Hong Kong, with more F&B businesses seeing the merit in embedding sustainability into their operations and eager to get started. We want to do everything we can to support, guide, inform and celebrate this important transition.”
Sara Burns, Hong Kong Lead at Belu said, “We're always so invigorated when our hospitality customers, businesses of all sizes, in Hong Kong choose to make a more sustainable choice, whatever stage of their sustainability journey they are at. We see their commitment to environmental responsibility not only drive their success, but also create a ripple effect of inspiring other businesses to get on board too. It’s great to celebrate and share some of those stories in this guide, to help others adopt a more sustainable approach.”

Supporting sustainable hospitality in Hong Kong
The SRA’s mission is to drive positive change through the hospitality industry worldwide. With a team on the ground in Hong Kong, The SRA is seeing an acceleration in the rate of change towards a more sustainable future; Hong Kong’s F&B industry is quickly evolving to become a new leader in sustainability for the APAC region. As more businesses sign up to the Food Made Good Standard, The SRA is thrilled to play a role in an exciting period of evolution as more hospitality operators see the value in adopting sustainable practices.
In March 2024, The SRA’s team of sustainability experts produced the Hong Kong Plastics Guide to facilitate a smooth transition to the Single-Use Plastics ban, helping Hong Kong’s F&B sector to embrace a future without single-use plastics. The Guide is publicly available and downloadable from The SRA website, free of charge, and includes both English and Traditional Chinese versions.
In August 2024, The SRA announced that the Food Made Good Standard itself is now also available in Traditional Chinese, making it even easier for businesses across Hong Kong to sign up, assess their sustainability and learn how to improve even further.
