It’s time for Hong Kong’s throw-away culture to be placed firmly in the rubbish bin. A ban on single-use plastic items will come into effect on April 22nd – Earth Day – marking a significant step forward for Hong Kong towards a more environmentally-conscious future.
Hong Kong currently sends a mind-boggling 11,000 tonnes of waste to landfill every day – 21% of which consists of plastic items. The new ban will hopefully lead to huge reductions in these figures.
While the short timeframe given for businesses to comply is challenging, The SRA seeks to reassure owners and operators that the long-term benefits will outweigh the inconvenience – embracing reuse systems and switching to plastic-free options often results in reduced costs.
The SRA’s team of sustainability experts has created the Hong Kong Plastics Guide to facilitate a smooth transition, clearing up any confusion and helping Hong Kong’s F&B sector to embrace a future without single-use plastics.
This Guide is available for download below, free of charge, and includes both English and Traditional Chinese translations.
The Hong Kong Plastics Guide:
- explains exactly what is covered by the Plastics Ban (and the penalties that apply),
- compares Hong Kong’s ban to similar legislation implemented in other regions,
- offers advice for how to make the transition work for you and your team,
- includes practical guides on how to reduce and replace single-use items, and
- outlines proper disposal methods for a range of materials.
