At The Sustainable Restaurant Association, we have a strong belief in the power of collaboration. When individual F&B businesses work together to share knowledge and resources, the industry as a whole moves faster towards the progressive and environmentally restorative future we need. To facilitate this, we hold quarterly Working Groups to encourage businesses to share and discuss their sustainability challenges, creative solutions and inspiring ideas.
These Working Groups are suitable for larger businesses in our network (those with 10+ sites) and usually held in London. Through a combination of expert presentations and guided group discussions on a selected theme, we create an effective and supportive learning environment in which businesses can share their ideas and challenges with one another, finding answers and taking inspiration from others in their field.
The theme for this year’s final Working Group was ‘Effective Sustainability Communications’. This was designed especially for professionals in communications, marketing or any role involved in shaping and sharing their brand’s sustainability messaging. The session covered key areas including:
- · how to communicate sustainability initiatives through online and physical channels;
- · how our own Marketing & Comms team at The SRA supports businesses in developing their strategy and messaging; and
- · valuable advice for avoiding greenwashing and staying compliant with the Green Claims Code.
On the day, we had some fantastic and insightful input from:
- the brilliant Young's marketing team, who shared a case study on how they integrated their sustainability strategy into their marketing approach;
- renowned journalist, consultant and sustainability editor Juliet Kinsman, who spoke about the importance of communicating authentically and honestly throughout the sustainability journey; and
- Rob Dun, Assistant Director at the CMA’s Consumer Directorate, who explained the Green Claims Code, the relevant regulations and the repercussions of making false claims.
YOUR GUIDE TO SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNICATIONS
Following this session, we’ve pulled together a PDF resource on effective sustainability communications, combining the expert advice from the Working Group presentations with outcomes from the group discussions, as well as some insights from our own team. This resource includes:

- the practical actions you can take to build an effective and meaningful communications strategy around your sustainability work;
- a best practice guide to terminology and which channels work best for which types of communication;
- the questions you need to ask to ensure that your communications comply with the Green Claims Code; and
- how our own Marketing & Communications team at The SRA supports the businesses in our network, sharing their progress and helping them to hone their messaging around sustainability.
