Entries Now Open for the British Street Food Awards!
ENTRIES ARE NOW OPEN FOR THE BRITISH STREET FOOD AWARDS – INCLUDING THE SUSTAINABLE STREET FOOD AWARD, JUDGED BY OUR TEAM!
The British Street Food Awards were founded back in 2009 by Food Mutiny, the events company started by award-winning food journalist and broadcaster Richard Johnson. In the years since, street food has become an important and much-loved part of the UK’s food scene. At the same time, the Street Food Awards have gone from strength to strength to become the number one competition for mobile food vendors in the UK and – with the addition of the European Street Food Awards in 2017 – across Europe. In 2023, the Awards also launched in the USA, primed to celebrate this richly textured melting pot of cultures and cuisines.
This year, the BSFA champions will be going on to compete in the grand final of the 2024 European Street Food Awards in Germany.
The Sustainable Street Food Award
We are proud that, once again, our team of sustainability consultants at The Sustainable Restaurant Association will be judging the Sustainable Street Food Award. This Award recognises a street food vendor that is going above and beyond to ensure that their food not only tastes good, but does good too.
The entry questionnaire (you can find it here!) has been designed to provide an overview of sustainability practices and is based on our Food Made Good Framework, assessing a business across three focus pillars: Sourcing, Society and the Environment. We can't wait to hear your stories and celebrate how the street food industry is championing sustainable dining!
There will also be some new Awards this year – including the Spice Award, the Best Food Hall Award and the Future Food Legend Award. The Best Looking, which is a public vote for the UK’s coolest van, truck or trailer, is sponsored by Majisign.
The 2023 winner of the Sustainable Street Food Award
Last year’s winner was Gamekeeper, a food truck business that specialises in sustainable British wild game and has been serving venison burgers across a range of locations, events and festivals since 2014. Among many commendable initiatives, we loved Gamekeeper’s attention to provenance and local sourcing, their fair treatment of staff and their reduction targets for food waste, energy use and water consumption.
As they said on their Instagram page following the Award, “Sustainability is something that we take great pride in at Gamekeeper, from our suppliers to serve-ware, and it’s an honour to be recognised for doing our bit for the environment. All our venison is 100% wild and fully traceable to its origin, and has been since we first opened the doors to our creaky handmade shack nine years ago. We are always looking for ways to better ourselves; that’s why we recycle all our cooking oil and donate surplus stock to a local food bank, reducing our waste and supporting those in need.”
