The World's 50 Best Restaurants and Bars

IN 2013, THE WORLD’S 50 BEST INTRODUCED A NEW SPECIAL AWARD, THE SUSTAINABLE RESTAURANT AWARD, TO CELEBRATE A RESTAURANT ON THE WORLD’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS LIST THAT WAS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO SERVE FOOD FIT FOR THE FUTURE.
IN ORDER TO JUDGE THIS AWARD, 50 BEST ENLISTED OUR HELP.
The SRA works harder than anyone else in the business to stay up to date with industry developments and their sustainability assessment is the gold standard for the F&B industry. We look forward to continuing our fruitful partnership with them!
REWARDING SUSTAINABILITY ON A GLOBAL SCALE
Because of our expertise in what a sustainable restaurant should look like, 50 Best asked us to come up with a judging process for the competition. Based on our Food Made Good Framework, we developed a globally applicable questionnaire for restaurants to fill in, providing us with information across the areas of Sourcing, Society and Environment. Over the years, we have updated and refined this questionnaire to ensure it captures the changing issues faced by restaurants who want to operate sustainably.
HOW WE DO IT
Assessing sustainability from afar isn’t always easy. How do you compare a steak restaurant in Argentina with a seafood bistro in France? Using our tried-and-tested FMG Framework allows us to judge restaurants across a range of issues, assessing sustainability against a set of comprehensive and holistic criteria.
Scoring restaurants against our questionnaire — as well as asking for supporting evidence of practices — enables us to evaluate these businesses, confidently awarding and celebrating restaurants who are going above and beyond to operate sustainably.
Not only does this give 50 Best (and us!) the chance to celebrate these restaurants, but the global nature and high profile of many of the chefs involved means that the potential to influence restaurants all over the world is huge.
WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED ALONGSIDE 50 BEST
Since 2013 our work has expanded to cover all of the lists produced by 50 Best, assessing restaurants and bars around the world. In 2023, this expanded to include hotels, too.
This work means we're celebrating chefs and restaurants on a global level. From highlighting MUME in Taiwain for showcasing the best of local Taiwanese ingredients to Aponiente in Spain for working tirelessly to protect our oceans through their menus, the range of initiatives underway is endless and we’re constantly impressed with the ever-increasing standard.
Each year, we find that leading restaurants, hotels and bars across the globe are continuing to raising the bar — at a time when we need these globally recognised businesses to demonstrate how and why a restaurant that puts people and planet first deserves to be rewarded.
