The 50
IN 2013, THE 50 (PREVIOUSLY THE WORLD’S 50 BEST) INTRODUCED A NEW SPECIAL AWARD. AS PART OF THE 50 BEST RESTAURANTS, THE SUSTAINABLE RESTAURANT AWARD WAS DESIGNED TO CELEBRATE ONE RESTAURANT ON THE LIST THAT WAS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO SERVE FOOD FIT FOR THE FUTURE.
IN ORDER TO JUDGE THIS AWARD, THE 50 ENLISTED OUR HELP.
REWARDING SUSTAINABILITY ON A GLOBAL SCALE
Because of our expertise in what a sustainable restaurant should look like, The 50 asked us to come up with a judging process for this new award.
Based on our Food Made Good Framework, we developed a globally applicable questionnaire for restaurants to fill in, providing us with information across the areas of Sourcing, Society and Environment. Over the years, we have updated and refined this questionnaire to ensure it captures the changing landscape and captures the most impactful actions restaurants can take.
HOW WE DO IT
Assessing sustainability from afar isn’t always easy. How do you compare a steak restaurant in Argentina with a seafood bistro in France? Using our tried-and-tested FMG Framework allows us to judge restaurants across a range of issues, assessing sustainability against a set of comprehensive and holistic criteria.
Scoring restaurants against our questionnaire — as well as asking for supporting evidence of their practices — enables us to evaluate these businesses, confidently awarding and celebrating restaurants who are going above and beyond to operate sustainably.
Not only does this give The 50 (and us!) the chance to celebrate these restaurants, but the global nature and high profile of many of the chefs involved means that the potential to influence restaurants all over the world is huge.
"The SRA works harder than anyone else in the business to stay up to date with industry developments and their sustainability assessment is the gold standard for the F&B industry. We look forward to continuing our fruitful partnership with them!"
WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED ALONGSIDE The 50
Since 2013 our work has expanded to cover all of the lists produced by The 50, assessing restaurants and bars around the world. In 2023, this expanded to include hotels, too.
This work means we are recognising excellence from chefs and restaurants on a global level. From highlighting MUME for showcasing the best of local Taiwanese ingredients to celebrating Aponiente's tireless work to protect our oceans through their menus, we are constantly impressed by the creativity and incredible variety of initiatives in hospitality businesses everywhere.
Each year, we find that restaurants, hotels and bars across the world are continuing to raise the bar. At a time when we urgently need more examples of how hospitality can create a positive, restorative impact on people and planet, acknowledging this exceptional work is more important than ever.
