How You Can Help Shape the Future of Sustainable Packaging
Don’t miss this important opportunity for all of us to have our say in the future of sustainable packaging regulations in the UK.
DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) is inviting feedback from businesses like yours (and ours) to contribute in shaping the way we handle packaging and its impact on the environment.
Why does this matter?
In recent years, sustainability has become a cornerstone of the restaurant industry, and for good reason. Packaging plays a significant role in our daily operations, and its impact on the environment is undeniable. The UK government, in partnership with Devolved Administrations, is taking steps to introduce Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging. This means that businesses will be held accountable for the environmental footprint of the packaging they use. This is an opportunity to incentivise eco-friendly practices, boost domestic recycling efforts and encourage a wider adoption of recyclable and reusable packaging.
Have your say
Right now, we have a unique opportunity to shape these regulations by sharing our opinions and experiences. The government is seeking input on the draft regulations, building on the approach outlined in their response to the EPR consultation in March 2022.
How can you contribute?
Your insights are invaluable in assessing the clarity and functionality of these draft regulations. They define the responsibilities of various stakeholders, including producers, exporters, re-processors, compliance schemes, local authorities and more. Your feedback can help identify any ambiguities or areas for improvement within the text.
You can find the link for the draft regulations here.
How to get involved: Two easy action steps
-
Review the consultation document: Take some time to go through the consultation document. It's crucial to understand the proposed changes fully.
-
Respond to relevant questions: You don't need to answer all the questions, just those that are pertinent to your organisation and expertise.
Deadline for contributions
The consultation period ends on 9th October 2023 at 23:59. Your engagement in this consultation will help shape policies that align with the interests of both businesses and the environment.
As champions of sustainability in the F&B industry, let's take this opportunity to influence the future of packaging regulations in the UK. By participating, we can ensure that the policies put in place will work for both businesses and the environment.
