World's 50 Best Restaurants and Bars
REWARDING SUSTAINABILITY ON A GLOBAL STAGE
In 2013, The World’s 50 Best introduced a new special award, the Sustainable Restaurant Award, to celebrate a restaurant on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list that was going above and beyond to serve food fit for the future.
In order to judge this award, 50 Best enlisted our help.
Being experts in what sustainable restaurants look like, 50 Best asked us to come up with a judging process for the competition. Based on our sustainability framework, we developed a globally applicable questionnaire for restaurants to fill in, providing us with information across sourcing, society and environmental areas. Over the years we have developed this questionnaire to ensure it captures the changing issues faced by restaurants who want to operate sustainably.
HOW WE DO IT
Assessing sustainability from afar isn’t always easy. How do you compare a steak restaurant in Argentina with a seafood restaurant in France? Using our tried and tested framework allows us to judge restaurants on a range of issues, holistically assessing sustainability from a 360 degree view.
Scoring restaurants against our questionnaire, as well as asking for supporting evidence of practices, enables us to evaluate businesses, confidently awarding and celebrating restaurants who are going above and beyond to operate sustainably.
Not only does this give 50 Best (and us!) the chance to celebrate these restaurants, the global nature and high profile of many of the chefs involved means that the potential to influence restaurants all over the world is huge.
WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED ALONGSIDE 50 BEST
Since 2013 our work has expanded to cover all 7 lists produced by 50 Best, assessing restaurants and bars around the world, and for the first time in 2023, hotels.
Celebrating chefs and restaurants on a global level, from highlighting MUME in Taiwain for showcasing the best of local Taiwanese ingredients to Aponiente in Spain for working tirelessly to protect our oceans through their menu - the range of initiatives underway is endless and we’re constantly impressed with the ever-increasing standard. The competition is hotting up at a time when we need these globally recognised businesses to demonstrate how and why a restaurant that puts people and planet first deserves to be rewarded.
