Have you turned your kitchen into a plastic-free zone, overhauled your menu to put plant-based dishes centre stage, introduced a successful socially inclusive recruitment policy, collaborated with a local producer for an ingredient normally sourced from overseas or launched a menu designed exclusively to showcase surplus food? If so, you could be half way to winning the Sustainability Award at the National Restaurant Awards 2019.
We want to reward the restaurant that’s made a big difference with an initiative launched in the past 12 months. We’re determined to find the most deserving winner, whether they’re a chip shop on the coast, an all-day diner under the arches or a bucolic gastro-pub. It’s not who or where you are that we’re interested in, but the impact you’ve made with a project in 2018/19.
Take inspiration from the 2018 winner café-ODE. The judges were won over by the Devon beachside café’s passion for tackling the issue of the moment – plastic packaging – and running with it, recruiting customers, neighbouring restaurants, suppliers and local children in their environmental crusade – kicking single-use plastic out of the community.
ODE well and truly demonstrated that a restaurant business, no matter how small and regardless of location, can show people what a better food system can look like, both on the plate and beyond.
