What is the Standard?

The Food Made Good Standard is the only 360-degree, holistic sustainability accreditation for F&B businesses

The Standard is awarded to restaurants and F&B businesses that meet a set of criteria focused on sourcing, society and environment. The accreditation aims to encourage and recognise sustainability practices in the food service industry.

why

Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is a large, urgent challenge, and requires each of us to act. It is not enough for businesses to signal that sustainability matters, they must demonstrate that they are taking action across all areas of their business. Diners care more than ever about sustainability. The Food Made Good Standard is a third-party certification, which signals to your staff, suppliers and customers that yours is a progressive business which understands that doing the right thing for people and for the planet is core to operations.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ACHIEVING THE STANDARD?

Accreditation can benefit your business in several ways:

  1. Action plan: Using our framework enables you to manage and prioritise your actions. The report provided at the end gives your business a ready-made action plan to embed positive changes, strengthen your supply chains, motivate staff, attract attention and build a thriving, future-fit business in the process.
  2. Recognition: Your business is provided with an independent, third-party accreditation and recognition of your actions on the sustainability issues that matter most.
  3. Competitive advantage: With more consumers choosing to dine at sustainable restaurants and demanding eco-friendly practices, accreditation can help your business stand out from the crowd.
  4. Cost savings: Sustainable practices can help your business reduce costs through initiatives such as energy and water efficiency and by reducing food waste.
  5. Enhanced reputation: Accreditation shows that your business is committed to environmental and social responsibility, which can enhance your reputation with customers, investors, and other stakeholders.
  6. Expert guidance: The SRA offers guidance on sustainable practices, providing your business with expertise that can help you achieve your goals.
  7. Access to a network: Achieving the Standard makes you part of a global movement for change. As part of the Food Made Good community you can share, learn and collaborate with a network of like-minded professionals committed to creating a positive future.
  8. Positive impact: By implementing sustainable practices, your business can have a positive impact on the environment and local communities, helping to create a more sustainable food system.

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS?

To achieve The Food Made Good Standard a business must score 50% or higher on the Food Made Good evaluation. Answers and evidence are submitted digitally on our custom-built, intuitive and user-friendly platform. Each submission is evaluated, evidence is checked, and further questions may be asked, before a final report is completed with a score along with an action plan for improvement.

Businesses scoring 50% or higher have achieved The Food Made Good Standard and are recognised via a star system once referred to by leading UK newspaper The Sunday Times as the Michelin Stars of Sustainability.

50%-59% = One Star
60%-69% = Two Stars
70%+ = Three Stars

Are my data and results confidential?

Our secure platform is fully confidential, as is your score and report. We encourage our network to share their actions and results publicly but there is no requirement for you to do so.

What are the requirements to take the Standard?

You need 12 months of operations to be assessed. For newly opened businesses, we can provide a provisional standard based on however many months of operations there are but require you to resubmit after 12 months.

If you are yet to start trading we can help you integrate sustainability into your whole business from the beginning. See our projects for more information.

Aponiente is working to achieve the highest possible certification of the Standard. That is why I would like to call on friends and colleagues to join in, to push together to make our industry the best for the planet and, above all, for people.

how else do we use THE STANDARD?

The Food Made Good Standard has been used as the basis for The SRA’s work as the sustainability partner and judge for many of the best-known industry awards including The World’s 50 Best Restaurants (including all its regional and sub-sector brands) the San Pellegrino Young Chef Awards, and in the UK’s National Restaurant Awards.

"The SRA works harder than anyone else in the business to stay up to date with industry developments and their sustainability assessment is the gold standard for the F&B industry."
